NGSの技術進歩はとてつもなく早い

On Tuesday, Illumina has announced their new next generation sequencer (NGS) would be released.

Illumina (Nasdaq:ILMN) today introduced the HiSeq® 2500, a next-generation sequencing system that will enable researchers and clinicians to sequence an entire genome in approximately 24 hours, “Genome in a Day”. The HiSeq 2500 leverages the continued technology advancements from both the HiSeq 2000 and MiSeq™ platforms.

“The ability to sequence an entire genome in a day with the same high quality data as the HiSeq 2000 will enable new opportunities for researchers to develop medically relevant whole-genome applications,” said Jay Flatley, President and Chief Executive Officer at Illumina. “With the HiSeq 2500, Illumina is taking another significant step forward in enabling our vision of revolutionizing human healthcare.”

Illumina Introduces the HiSeq 2500

Until a few years ago, NGS was too expensive and these data was said to be difficult to handle.
However, they had released a low price NGS named MiSeq last year and some researchers could have accessed to it more easily.
The weakness MiSeq is performance. To save the cost, MiSeq is low-though-put sequencer compared to HiSeq2000.
This news shows we can upgrade MiSeq to HiSeq2500 if we hope. Therefore, MiSeq user can have the opportunity to change to new one if they start thinking about getting more performance during their research.

The data handling maybe is difficult yet, but the new user-friendly software will probably improve this situation according to increasing this users. Because the improvement of software is faster than that of sequence technology.

Will the NGS be used as the clinical diagnostics near future?
